Oil Temperature

I drive a 1989 200 Turbo 20v which is in excellent condition inside and out. With the temperature here in Buffalo in the sigle digits, I noticed that the oil temperature gauge indicates the oil temperature is just a bit about 60 degrees C. The car seems to run fine, the oil is topped up and the oil pressure is OK. Can anyone tell me the acceptable operating temperature range for oil in frigid weather conditions.

RE: Oil Temperature

The 60°C might be just about right since you are losing a lot of heat through the oil pan. What I have also noticed with Audi's and other vehicles that once they get up in age especially in the areas where a lot of salt is used in the winter. You will experience corrosion problems under the hood. The reading from your Audi gauges might not be accurate enough due to some corrosion or even the sending unit itself. To make things worse the Audi dash has its own set of problems. The only sure way to know the oil temperature is to stick a thermocouple on the end of the dip stick and get a second reading.
