RE: Cold start up?

I thought I had smelled gasoline during warm-up a few times, and definitely smelled it this morning. I have also taken some time to study the warm-up behavior of the car right after start-up. There is an additional sound from under the hood that stops after a minute or so...and I've got to believe that there is a rich mixture being injected during this time.

Also, if I wait a bit, the idle slowly decreases from an original 1200 rpm to about 800 or so...it takes about four minutes.

I haven't smelled any gas from the exhaust after the car's warmed up, so my guess is that it has to do with the ECU, and that it's on purpose.

Yup, I noticed the same thing. I think cold start up actually drains GAS. After couple cold start ups, 1/8 of gas is GONE.
Mine drops from 1200 to 650-700 rpm.

So, if nothing else, we can be sure that the car is doing what it's supposed to do. Now, I haven't seen the gas gauge drop by as much as 1/8th, but my average mpg does go down a couple of tenths if I allow the car to warm up while standing still. I'm willing to lose a few ounces of gasoline to let the car warm up properly.

yeah my allroad does the same thing. pretty sure the smell is normal though, as it goes away after a couple of minutes.

Make sure you are also letting it cool down before you turn off. This can lead to lots of problems on cold starts later.

The noise you hear is the air pump prob that stays on for a minute when you start. You will notice a change in exhaust sound when it turns off.
