Do you have any other options or just Automatic & Sports Pkg. I'm not an A3 owner, but thinking about trading in my 2005 MB C230K SS.

Anyways, this is what I found....

avoid large sudden throttle openings (like flooring it), but gradually over the course of 1000 miles, to start at around 3500rpms, and then allow revs to climb higher until you are close to redline as you get to 1000 miles. The idea is not to place too heavy a load on the engine, and to not visit high revs for any period of time. You can rev to higher rpms, but not stay there, and don't get there by stomping the gas pedal to the floor.

Avoid long periods of traveling at a certain rpms and do not change the oil early, as there is a special non-detergent break-in oil in the crankcase.

Basically think of it as sanding a wood-working project. Lots of repetition with light pressure yeilds the smoothest surface. Modern engines are machined to much finer tolerances than before, and so large chunks of metal are no longer much of an issue. The break-in oil should help prevent glazing, and varied power demands should also help.

There is another school of thought that says large throttle openings is the best way to break in an engine, but I've had extremely good results from the conservative method. If the rough method worked that well, I would guess that demo cars at dealers would be the fastest, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

My Alfa has 252,000 highway, canyon, and racetrack miles, and sees redline every time the oil warms up. It uses maybe 1/4 qt of oil between 3000 mile changes. In the case of German cars, it seems they become more and more powerful over the first 10,000 miles.
