A3 - DIY oil change

All,

I'm considering the purchase of a new A3... likely 2.0T Quattro and am wondering if changing the oil is DIY. I've always changed the oil & oil filter on my cars every 3000 miles ('79 Jeep CJ5, '89 Saab 900, '93 Mazda RX7, '01 Volvo S40, '06 Mini MCS, etc) and not being able to do it on the A3 could change my mind.

Any special tools required? I know my S40 has a filter cup that without it... changing the oil filter out is nearly impossible. : )

Thanks!
Scott

Thanks for the link. I appreciate that.... so it looks like as for tools there is the oil filter drain tool but there aren't any other helpful tools?

Do you access the oil filter from the bottom or top?

Synthetic motor oil is recommended or required?

Thanks!

I have an '06 A3 3.2 S-line and I have to get to the filter from the bottom. It is a cartridge filter, not a regular oil filter...be carefull when removing the cap. It is plastic and can crack if you are too forcefull. I learned that the hard way when I did my first oil change......

Just the large socket for the filter. Bottom, as said above. You have to take off the plastic pan under the engine. Synthetic is required: any that meets VW 502.xx or better.
