Hey there all,

I am taking delivery of a 2007 A3 next week and I will be adding two amps, a sub and component/ coaxial speakers in the doors. Does anyone have any idea of what the depth limitations in the doors for speakers; i.e. will speakers with a 2.6 inch mounting depth fit?
; and has anyone installed an aftermarket sub in the place of the stock sub?

If so - what size 12"? How deep can you go? and does it rattle like crazy if you do?

Rgeardless of any answers I will post what I find out in the installation process for all later with pics.

Thanks all,

Joe

Thanks,

Joe

RE: After Market audio questions for late model A3s
The depth for your door speakers shouldn't be a problem. I'm running infinity reference 6.5 components and they fit fine. As fo the sub, the stock sub is a 5" in a plastic enclosure. I've been contemplating making a fiberglass enclosure of the void behind the stock sub enclosure and installing a ten inch in it's place. There isn't a lot of room for an elaborate system if you want to keep the trunk a functional storage area. You didn't mention replacing the stock HU. If you get the concert (non-bose) HU then you should be aware that there is an amp in the HU to run the front speakers and the amp in the stock sub enclosure powers the back doors and the sub. I'm actually very pleased with how much better my stereo sounds with just replacing the stock component speakers. I disconnected the sub because it was too boomy and you can't control it spearately from the door speakers. The infinity's have a good amount of bass. One other downside to the stock HU is it has some sort of volume limiter or something to protect the speakers so when listening to music at higher volumes you'll hear it go up and down and it becomes annoying. This is one of the main reasons I would replace the HU other than a better Ipod integration.
