buying advice
 

Hi all, Im new here and need advise quite badly.
Iv just got shot of my old and first car (punto [:@]) will be missed but time to move on.
I have decided on the audi a3 1.8 still quite cheep on my insurence as im just turning 20.
Just wanted to know about what i should look out for when going to view the car?
Which year should i go for? I have about 5-6K to spend.

Nice choice pal. You won't be disappointed.
Well first of all I'd go for a 1.8T. From memory its only group 14 insurance, standard 1.8 is group 12, 1.8 Sport is group 13 (I think). I love my 1.8 20v, but i can't help but wish I had the extra 25bhp and all the toys you get on the Turbo (onboard computer, firmer suspension, Climate Control, RCL etc). For the sake of a couple of hundred quid on insurance it would be well worth it. Also, if you're into modding, there is more potential on the Turbo models.
Things to look out for are if the Cambelt service has been done recently. If not it is very costly. If they're selling close to a service interval, it's most likely going to be an exspensive one and they don't fancy shelling out.
Apart from that, any general repairs or faults such as exhaust, suspension, airbag & electrics would cost you your right kidney if they're up the spout, because you're buying VAG and parts aren't the cheapest. Look out for a VAG specialist in your area if you don't want to pay stealers prices for repairs & servicing.
It's worth insisting on the BOSE sound system option too. Way better than standard.
£6k should get you a 98-00 1.8T with respectable miles, or a slightly newer 1.8 20v. I paid £5750 for my R Plate 1.8 20v a year ago, which was too much but I was blinded by the TT alloys that are on there! Don't forget that the engines will last longer than you if they're serviced properly, so high milers are a valid option. Take a look on ebay, they're cheap on there as long as you're willing to travel for viewings.
