I just bought my 2006 A3 last week and yesterday noticed a tapping sound, speeds up when I hit the gas, like a sewing machine. It is coming from the motor. I've read it might be the lifters? I made an appointment with the Audi dealer but the soonest they could see it is 2.5 weeks from now so looking for any possible similar situations so I don't worry too much.

 

OH btw, this is the 2 liter turbo...

 

A mild tapping sound (very much like a muffled sewing machine) at idle and just above is quite typical of the 2.0T.

There can be a much louder 'clicking' that seems to come from the glove box area, which is actually the fuel lines rattling in the channel under the passenger side floor. There's a Service Bulletin to fix that, but it is quite easy to do, and more effective with foam inserted in the mid-channel area, as OOOO-A3 describes:

I think I have the same exact problem with my new 08 A3 2.0T. I took it back to the dealer after a week and they said it was normal andwould eventually go away once I put some mileage on it...that was 2500 miles ago and it still hasn't gone away. Drives me nuts, sounds like a VW bug when driving inthe 10-40 mph range. Is it really normal and will it ever go away?

 

It is called direct fuel injection and is heard mostly during accelleration. It is normal and will not go away, you will become accustomed to it.[8D]

But, by all means, Alicia, have your dealer check yours, it could be something totally different.

I guess this is normal.

I hear it at idle on my 2.0T, otherwise I crank up the stereo and it goes away

 

See Chef's section above regarding aftermarket exhaust systems. Kidding.

I pick up my new A3 tomorrow. I will let everyone know if I have the same issue. Can't say I noticed it a few months ago when I had my test drive.

 

I believe that is just the sound the 2.0T makes. I was concerned about it when I first got my car. It never went away and now I am used to it....
