Erratic idiling
 

Ive got an A3 1.6 sport 1997 (first ever Audi) 60,000 miles)) and I have a problem with the revs when the car is idling (just ticking over). The accelerator pedal sometimes taps my foot (moves up and down slightly) of its own accord without me touching it if Im sitting in traffic and the the rev needle fluctuates up and down also of its own accord. I have to give the car a bit of throttle before relasing the clutch when moving off or else the car will cut out. This is most prevalent when Im reversing. I left the car with a mechainc (Audi/VW specialist) to fix it and he replaced the throttle body. This has not completley sorted the problem out although it is slightly better than it was before. Can anyone tell me what the problem is so I know the mechainc wont be riding me in the future (not literally).

I'm having similar problems! Additionally deceleration is not smooth. When i lift off the throttle peddle (even very gently) the deceleration is jerky to start with and is then smooth. When parked in neutral and you take it up to say 3000rpm and then ease off gently, the throttle appears unresponsive and then will suddenly drop several hundred rpm and then build back up slightly and you get a weird kicking back from the throttle peddle.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Have just joined and was searching for other issues however, my partners A3 had the exact same issues.
The fix for us was found to be an air leak caused by a small breather pipe that had worked its way loose from its housing (or the dealership did not replace after it got serviced ???).
Follow the air intake for the right hand side to back of engine, near the bulk head. On the inderside of this is a very small hose ..... this bugger was our quick fix...........

Thanks luckey, was having the exact same issues as the above posters. Least I can give the garage something to check now as they had fixed two other air-leaks and replaced a cracked dip-stick housing, i'll report back.
