Have you checked sites like Edmunds and Consumer Reports? That's where I'd go if I was in a huge hurry. CR has realistic mileage figures from their test-drives too. Of course, you have to pay for access to CR, but I'd do that too if I was in a huge hurry.

Your mileage will inprove after initial breaking in of the engine. Initially you get mid 20's. At about 2000 miles you should get 31-33 on highway, drive it at 80 MPH and it drops down to 29 MPG. In town long commutes can have great mileage 25-26 MPG easy after a few miles. Today I had a long drive at 45 MPH on a 8 mile long expessway and I was looking at 35 MPG. Driving in sports mode is not going to get great gas mileage but its a lot of fun in a A3!

Sports mode in the manual transmissionis your foot to the floor and shifting at redline.
Anyway, I get around 24mpg in mixed driving, and I drive very spiritedly all of the time. I can get around 30mpg on the highway as long as I'm not doing 100+mph. LOL
BTW, I havea stage II chip and other goodies which make my mileagea tad worse.
Cheers!

I guess I just past JohnS1's breaking period of 2000 miles and averaged 22mpg with mixed driving but most of my trips are short with lights so it is not helping the average...
When driving 'normally' shifting before 5K, trips average 24-25mpg - highway which I do not do a lot is 25-30. If everybody is right and things do get better, sweet!
