Hi Guys, I have a 98 1.6L A3, the oil pressure light signal and beep keeps going off at random intervals.

the mechanic reckons its the oil pump, but I am rather skeptical, it seems as though he was a little unsure in his body language also. I'd rather not fork out ok $1500 for an uncertainty.

So just until I get a second opinion I wondered how I could turn the darn light and beep off.
I would have though by simply unplugging the oil pressure switch would have done it. Which by the was was replaced today.

I am guessing the sensor is the one right next to the oil filter to the right?

Also does anyone have previous experience with an issue like this?

 

do you feel a loss of power with it? if not, then you might not need to replace the oil pump -- it might just be a stupid sensor

 

So I end up draining the oil and pulling the sump off. Cleaned the pickup and when draining the oil I am sure I saw a big clump of crap come out.
Before I drained the oil I used some product that is suppose to remove the crap .... It must have worked cause after putting it back together no problems. I did use a slightly thicker oil not a problem for about 500 km now

 

interesting .. i wonder what the clump of crap was and if it's something that you can prevent.
