A Pillar nav
Although this post is off topic... I'm going to argue that it had and was originally meantfor thelate Audi A3, which is now a moot point. So, withmy sheer brilliance... well, actually because I had these lying around. [:@]
http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/DSC00022.JPG So I thought, "I had these machined... cost me a pretty penny... it was meant to go in the audi... need to use it in something... but what?" May 5 A pillar nav! http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/DSC00021.JPG So out comes the a pillar while I made a few measurements and some marks before putting it under the knife. http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/DSC00023.JPG Once the hole was cut I put some epoxy in some strategic places and sat for 15 minutes to let it cure. Once the top cured, I added a stick to lock the position. http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/DSC00026.JPG http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/DSC00029.JPG Then came the fiberglass. I coated the fiberglass mat on both sides and layed it on the pillar and shaped it as it cured. http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/DSC00035.JPG May 6 Then came the test fit... The next day! :banghead: I didn't realize it takes so long to get this stuff to cure. http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/DSC00037.JPG So isntead of layering fiberglass resin, I decided to get some good ole body filler to get the shape. This stuff cures fast (15 mins and you can start sanding it) http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/DSC00041.JPG Once she was filled in all the right places, next came the sanding. A word of advice, wear a mask and some sort of eye protection. I had a mask on hand but didn't have the goggles but after 5 minutes of wondering what glass particles would do to my eyes gave me enough reason to to pick some up. http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/DSC00046.JPG May 7 So after some additional sanding... patching some holes... and some more sanding... I got it primered today!!! Isn't she beautiful? http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/DSC00053.JPG So thats all folks... tomorrow I'm hoping to get it re-textured and painted black back to its OEM (or close) black. |

RE: A Pillar nav
Man, I dunno...
I wouldn't want to be messing with the A-pillar with the side curtain air bag in there... Maybe not an issue with an S2000? |

Richard, you are definitely a creative SOB! Too bad you've gone to the dark side. LOL
I just hope some f-cker doesn't try and rip that thing out of your car. Cheers! |

RE: A Pillar nav
Here's another update....
Its done!!!!!! http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/fin05.JPG http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/fin06.JPG On/Off Splash Screen http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/fin02.JPG http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/fin03.JPG http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/fin04.JPG Speaker in the window defroster vent. http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~lrichard/nav/fin01.JPG As you can see, I gave up texturing all together. Instead, I matched the guage cluster satin black. I'm not sure if I'll go ahead and paint the roof trim and the other a pillar but we shall see. |

RE: A Pillar nav
Looks really nice Night. You definitely have a lot more patience and skill than me for that sort of work. Very professional.
Cheers! |
RE: A Pillar nav
Very good work! Although, as you've said before, it'll be harder on the A3 due to the cloth surface on the A pillar.
|
RE: A Pillar nav
Amazing work!!
What Nav are you using... I have an older Garmin and placement is an issue b/c unless sitting just right it doesn't seem to get access to the satellites... Did you run the external antenna or is it good like that?? |
RE: A Pillar nav
[sm=massbounce.gif]wow amazing -I can barely tie my shoes with my two left hands...[sm=roll.gif]
Congrats |
RE: A Pillar nav
Using a TomTom one. It has one of the best antenna's for reception out there. I remember the day I picked it up, the Best Buy dude said that its the only one that can pick up a signal in the store. SOLD!:D
