Sure, IF they clear the brake calipers, andIF you don't mind the wheels sticking out about 10mm outside the fenders. Stock offset on an A3 is 56mm. By going to 35mm offsets, the outer edge of the tire will be outside the fender. Besides throwing crap all over the side of your car, the tires will rub on the lower edge of the fender opening under cornering or heavy load, even with stock suspension height and especially with sport or lowering springs. And we haven't even gotten into the extra load on the wheel bearings and suspension caused by theadditional 20+ mm offset leverage.

I just put 45mm offset wheels on my A3 and after seeing where they place the tire - at the very edge of the fenders -under no circumstance would I go to a lesser offset. I may still have to install crashbolts just to make sure I have suspension travel clearance with 225 width tires.

Just because the wheels will bolt on the hubs does not mean they fit or are a good idea.

I'm the type of guy who is obsesive in those case....I really want everything to be perfect but I also want to find a acceptable compromise...

You are sure the OEM wheel of sport package is 56? I saw a few different values on the internet.

In my case the setup is for a winter package and i'm going on 205/55 r16 tires on mags that I can buy for cheap (momo arrows, 16x7 5x112 offset 35 ). In no normal circumstance this wheel/tire combo will be used for performance driving.

Please, I want more opinions on this.....share your toughs

Hopefully anytime the subject of tire fitment comes up this will help people figure out what works and what has problems. I know very few tire/wheel resellers that had any of this because I asked. I had to figure it out one piece at a time. A3s are hard to fit with oversize or different offset wheels and tires due to their high offset suspension requirements.People who try to stuff 245 (or larger) tires without knowing the challenges will have problems with tire sidewall rubbing on the struts or fender lips. People who run lower offset wheels (<45MM) will run into issues with tires overhanging the fenders and rubbing on the tread. I apolgize if this is too much data, it what you need to know to fit your car successfully.

A3 OEM Wheels are made by Ronal in Poland. Their size is 7.5X17 with a 56mm offset. This all is cast on the back of the spokes of every wheel, so I'm pretty sure its authoritative.

The stock wheelsweigh 44lbs with a half-worn Conti SportContact 2 mounted. Tire Rack says a Conti SC2 225/45-17 weighs in at 21 or 22 lbs making the stock wheels weigh in around 23-24 Lbs each. Depending on how much the worn away rubber weighed. The stock tire height is 25 tall. If your tire/wheel package goes over 50Lbs, your handling will go with it due to increased unsprung weight and rotational mass. If your tire height is too great, you get a free lift kit and inaccurate speedometer readings. So stay within those limits.

With the stock Contis, there is about7mm clearance between the sidewall and the strut in front. With 45mm offset 18" wheels and 225/40 that jumps to about 14-15mm, because mynewYokohamasare about 8mm wider section (4mmfront and back)than my old Contis so 7+(56-45) = 18 and 18-4 = 14. The math explains my measurements, but the outside edge of the tire is flush with my fenders.

Because of sidewall flex under cornering, going with less than 5-7mm of clearance inside or out will show signs of rubbing on the strut or inner fender lip. That means 235s are about the maximum section that will fit cleanly, and that require a very narrow range of 47 to 50mm offset wheels. 235/40-17s are 24.3" tall and 235/40-18s are 25.6" tall. That changes fit also. 225/45-17, 225/40-18, 255/35-18and 225/35-19 are all very close to 25".

That said, I have seen one A3 with 245/40-17 Hoosiers at an autocross. I was told it took 3 different tries with wheels to get a fit, and then only with crashbolts to get an extra bit of negative camber to clear the fender lips. These tiresare 24.8" tall, and that helps explain why they can be squeezed in.

Stasis also fits 255/35-18s on their Challenge Series A3s, but I have to believe they have very specific wheels and do some fender rolling and fender liner top screw removal to make it work. They are kinda quiet on the subject.

That's a really informative post you got there, it will surely help many A3 owner just as it did for me.

But on my side, I dont think I would have a suspension componentrubbing issue, i'm going to a smaller offset + a thiner tire. I'm more concern about being farther away from the bearing (premature wear) and rubbing on the fender with shock movement.

I may be 21 mm away more than stock (56 -35 = 21) BUT i'm rolling on 205 tires, i'm getting a small clearance here (225 (stock) -205 = 20/2 for each side of tire= 10mm)

I may be be farther of 21mm but i'm back in of 10 mm because of the thinner tire, thatmean i'm only 10mm more outside than stock wheel,I think it might be acceptable.

The 205/55 r16 is REALLY close to outside dia. of stock tire, I dont see any problem here. Weight wise it can't be worse than using steel wheels like most other canadians who drives in snow?

17" wheels from Tire Rack range mostly from 45 to 52 mm offset. I would stick with those specs. 16" is cutting it close, but some on this forum have said they fit.
