premature tire wear

premature tire wear
My 07 A3 only has 9200 miles on it and I already need new tires. Both front tires are worn only in the middle of the tire. I can see small pieces of "metal thread" in the tire they are worn so much. Could this be a problem with the suspension? Is this something Audi will take care of under warranty or am I going to have to fork 300-400 for new tires? Thanks.

RE: premature tire wear
Based on my past experience with various cars (I am an Audi noob), if only the centre of the tire is worn, it is an indication of over inflation...unless there are ridges that you can feel as you run your hand over the circumference of the tire. If you feel an "uneveness" when you do this, it may be an indication of improper toe-in.

my guess is that they're the p6s that everyone has issues with. also, my guess would be that your alignment is off or overinflation as stated above.
unfortunately, i think you might have to foot the bill and get some new tires.

Indeed.. they are the P6's. I think I am going to get Yokohama s.drive or Goodyear F1's. sigh. How can my alignment be off if they both wear evenly down the middle? Wouldn't they wear uneven if my alignment was off? Thanks for the replies.

RE: premature tire wear
It's easy to check for over inflation yourself. Have you ever checked the pressure. When I left the dealer after purchasing mine the tires had about 45 psi in them. I backed the perssure down to what the specs say on the door sill (38 front, 35 rear)and didn't have any problems regarding the center wear. Alignment being off would not cause the wear you are describing.

RE: premature tire wear
About a week after I drove the car off the lot I got a nail stuck in my front tire that caused a slow leak. I plugged it and I think I inflated to 45 psi. So my noob mistake. I just got back from getting new tires. I got 2 Yokohama Advan S.4 and put them on the back. I put the P6's from the back on the front. Car drives heck of a lot better now. Back to driving aggressive

RE: premature tire wear
Well I just took my 2007 in for the 25K service and they told me my front tires were worn down also... but I made it to 25k miles so I guess thats not that bad. Was hoping to get something other than the P6's but the dealer said that I had 10k-15k miles left on the back and recommended that I don't have tires with different tread patterns on the front and rear so they convinced me to get 2 new P6's for the front only... did I get suckered into getting the P6's again or could I have put any new tire on the front??

The rear tires on a front-wheel drive car aren't doing much more then keeping the back end off the ground. If saving money was your objective, you could have done better by just rotating front-to-back. But you'd still be stuck with the POS P6's.
