Should an A3 TDI 90BHP use much oil???
My A3 TDI is using about 4mm of oil (on dipstick) every 2 weeks. Is this normal? (65000 miles on clock)

no, but on the other hand its a diesel. I would think of changing oil type for syntatic and check for leaks.

Thanks,
Should I be using semi sythetic oil? She isn't leaking, i'm just worried that she may have engine wear (piston rings etc) but with 65000 i don't think it should need rebuilt. |

4mm of oil in 2 weeks how many miles? what weather conditions "very hot/hot/average/cold" your driving habits do you drive hard as it all adds up, 4mm is not bad really for a diesel use semi synthetic because of the times it has to be changed so its cost effective

RE: Should an A3 TDI 90BHP use much oil???
Hello,
Sorry to Butt-in .... But I think I have a similar situation. I have a 2006 A3 2.0T, DSG model. I am currently at 17,000 miles an am using 1/4 to 1/3 Qt. of oil every 1,000 miles. There is a solid coating of soot on the exhaust that can be scraped off into pieces/flakes. I have asked the local Audi Dealer for a technical specification .... then I would be happy. They say it's "normal" .... pat me on the head, and send me out the door on my way. Mainly freeway miles, low-medium acceleration (usually into traffic from on-ramp), moderate temperatures (65-100 F). (See post under A3) forum if interested for more info. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks very much. |
RE: Should an A3 TDI 90BHP use much oil???
I used to own the same TDI engine in my VW. It should always have a 505.01 specific motor oil used. That is a high quality FULLY SYNTHETIC oil. I recommend a 5w-40 - I always used Mobil 1 SUV/Diesel. THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!
I did notice that I would go through 1/2 quart of oil about every 3k-4k miles on the TDI. That is normal. Any greater consumption than that and I would have the engine checked. The FSI engine also needs a fully synthetic oil as well. On my 2.0T FSI, I lost about 1/2 quart of oil around 4k miles during the break-in. Oil was changed at 5k miles and I have now over 8k miles and the oil level is still full. I would be surprised is the FSI didn't use a little oil between changes but I wouldn't expect more than a 1/2 quart loss within the 10k mile interval. That's the TDI facts and my opinion on the FSI. Cheers! Chef |
