Default Triptronic trouble

If you're under warranty (extended?) then you should not have to be paying $345 for anything.

I assume when you say "trip mode" you mean tip mode, and not your trip computer. The Tiptronic Control Unit (TCU) is in the right side of the passenger footwell, not under the shifter plate. They probably think the shifter itself has bad connections or something. Before they go replacing parts ask them if they know that theTCU is functioning properly. The shift plate cover is just that - a cover. There are electronics under the cover, but the cover itself does nothing but cover it up.

The TCU is what you would have modified when you want to upgrade your tiptronic shifting.

The only time my tiptronic acted up was after I did an engine wash and forgot to bag over a certain sensor. It shorted out and did not work for a week - after that it seemed to come back ok.

When upgrading to a K-04 turbo, or something bigger, you should go with an exhaust upgrade as well. AWE strongly suggests it too. I don't have a K04, but when I do I will make sure to have an exhaust first. Its likely because youwill probably need higher back pressure to keep you from loosing all your boost out the *** of the car.

Your coolant temp sensoris bad? Or your external temp sensor?

Default Triptronic trouble

hah hah - I know this stuff because I read a lot, and because I have been elbows deep in my engine several times. The only time I will bring my car to a mechanic is if I really can't figure out what the heck is causing a problem - then, after they diagnose it, if I figure I can fix it myself, I will park it inmy garage and go to it.

Your extrenal temperature sensor is located just in front-bottom of the radiator behind the bumper. Its just a small sensor that plugs in - you can change that yourself without much difficulty. See the plastic clip in the pic.

By the way - get yourself chipped and you won't have to worry about such foolish things as a speed limiter.

its cool man - while you have a warranty there's no need to risk losing it. I never chipped til I had 80K on my car! I have 105K now, and its been all pure fun.

A GIAC chip can be found at www.awe-tuning.com. I actually bought mine used from a fellow audiworlder (audiworld.com) - but make sure your car can use anyting you buy 2nd hand. To keep things simple don;t assume you can use any chipped ECUthat does not have the same part number as yours (written on the top of the ECU). Do your research (the audiworld search function can give all kinds of info) and you will come out fine.

The only chip I know of that can give multiple programs is the APR ECMS system that allows you to change programs using a combination entered in on the cruise control stock. This system has been said to work very well and gives you a nice choice of alternate programs. But I would only buy it if you intend to use different programs (ie. a 100 octane program for racing, a stock program for the dealer, a etc...) if you own a non-warrantied car, and intend to be chipped all the time, don't bother with ECMS.

Between APR and GIAC (these are the two major powers)... GIAC is known to deliver raw power with delightful acceleration. APR has been said to deliver a more smoother power band and reacts more like a stock car (just with a lot more juice). I have the GIAC and am very happy with it - I have never run with an APR chip.

I am planning a K-04 mod next spring though, and APR has no K04 applicable system... So it seems GIAC (who does support the K04 turbo) was a good pick for me...

by the way - here's a more frightening pic of my car... when I did my own timing belt change...
