I have an '03 1.8t and i've timed myself a few times. The best time I've gotten is a little under 10 seconds. I'm not chipped yet either.

Your car sounds perfectly normal to me.

I just can't believe you can't feel the turbo kick in. It is most noticeable for me when i'm at a standstill in 1st gear and gun it. It starts off slow, lagging, until it hits about 3k rpms, then it takes off. Happens in other gears as well, it's just the most noticeable in 1st.

Wait a second, I think you didn't get driving gloves yet and are gripping the steering wheel too tight to accelerate correctly.

^ He has a point.... If you grab the wheel too tight it will flex all ofthe steering components between your steering wheel and steering rack, resulting in less than optimal driveline/tire to pavement contact, resulting in longer 0-60 times... Its basicphysics really...

its cuz you have a manual man, its easy to feel it when its in one gear the auto tranny is always workin and thinkin makein **** smooth and workin at changing gears so that whole kick you get is still there on his car its just not as noticable cuz of the tranny

Good morning all,

Thanks for the 411 so far. Everyone suggests getting chipped; that's what I'd expect from this crew . But for now at least let's assume I don't want to do that… reading here the last few weeks it seems like SO many people have problems with the process, and besides… I just got the car, I'd like to find the pleasure in this where it already exists, at least for now. And there is plenty… as NuYorka103185 said, get it to a roll and punch it… hoooya, that definitely feels better. It's that dead stop that hurts. And I'll readily admit that it's the 40-80 speed that's far more important than the 0-60.

Thanks for the explanation on the trubo; so it's gradual. Fascinating. Thanks.

Amze's the only one to call out that the 10 (or 11!) second time though is "disgusting". Considering that the reviews clocked this car a 8.6, shouldn't I be getting closer to that? It's an auto for crissake, not like I'm "not shifting properly". Something still seems amiss to me.

And (perhaps I'll start a different thread on this), why would I be getting a slower 0-60 in the 'S' mode than in the 'D' mode?

cheers
-Joseph

I have no idea why your getting such a bad mark on your 0-60... Are you driving and holding the stop watch and mabye reacting a second to slow to when you actually hit 60mph.. It doesnt seem right, 10 seconds is terrible.. a Toyota Camery can probably go faster 0-60 than that, not to mention the new Camerys have 0-60 times in the 6.7 region, when I read that in auto week I nearly cried.. my car is slower than a ******* Camery, sigh... Anyway, its bothersome that your results are so bad. Perhaps you have a boost leak? Bad Air filter?.... somethings gotta be keeping you from getting in the 8's..

don't worry about your 0-60 time your not driving a honda, and i bet you are comfortable.
NO question about it, comfortable and happy, and way better than my last car (which was a Honda… well, Acura). But you know, kinda thought it'd be quicker off the line. Owell.

DBW is drive by wire. It is an alternative way of giving your car throttle that is more electronic and less mechanised. It results in weaker throttle response. Look up drive by wire on google or something for more detailed info
Aha, thanks for defining DBW. I do need to understand "drive by wire" better. If it's good enough for an F-16, it's good enough for my Audi right? LOL

I need to pay closer attention. As I said, in watching the road - not the tach - I could be mistaking turbo bumps for gear changes. But the consensus on here seems to be that the turbo is gradual so I wouldn't necessarily feel the boost kick in. Kinda wish the car had a turbo gauge, just as an FYI.

I was in stop-and-go traffic on the way to work this morning so didn't get to try it out. Will get on a quiet road tonight and have a play.

I am driving and holding the stopwatch, but that can't explain 2 seconds of lag. My reactions are better than that (if they weren't I'd have no business being on the road in the first place!). I am staring the stopwatch the instant I slam my foot on the gas. From there, there is a noticeable lag before the car takes off. I wonder if in the car mag ratings, they wait to start the timing until the car actually MOVES. No idea how they test, but if the time starts when the car breaks a laser and stops when it hits 60, then I'll be it is. That would shave off a second right there, easily.

Other than this "problem", which probably isn't one at all, the car drives great. So I won't take it in for an exam now, but when I take it in for the next scheduled maintenance I'll definitely ask about it.
