Default 01 A4 1.8t CEL #code0171 ---fixed!---

"engine too lean (bank one)"

I tried cleaning the MAF, changed the fuel filter.
If I clear the code, it comes back after about 30-50miles.

I suspect a vacuum leak, but I can't find one.

What iscommon problems on these cars?

2001 A4 1.8t 5 speed 75K miles.

could be your maf......... not dirty but they are known to fail.... mine failed at about the same time...people might tell you it is icm, but you don't have one

if you decide to get one, you can get a new one from the vw dealer for half the price as a refurb from anywhere

engine too lean could mean dirty/clogged injectors, exhaust leak, vacuum leak (check all the lines, even the one under the intake manifold), MAF, 02 sensor....

well too lean is not enough fuel or way too much air. it can't be 02 sensor cuz if they were bad there would be a code for it directly. im going for the vacuum leak. there's bound to be one just keep looking.

Vacuum leak or MAF failure. If you let the car idle then just listen for an air leak. If there isn't one then replace your MAF sensor. Get it from www.avalonmotorsports.com

Thanks for the replies!

I forgot to mention, that even though there is a code, it runs perfect. No misses, no stumble, maybe down in power, but I'm not really sure, as I don't drive it all the time.

I have listened for a leak many times, and I hear none.

If it was the MAF, would it still drive ok?

Anyway to test? I just don't want to start throwing parts at it.

yeah, your car will still run perfectly, but there is still a problem. Make sure that all of the little black hoses are not cracked or frayed. Especially by the intake manifold towords the back of the engine.

Well, I did the tennis ball test. Found out one fitting had a small leak. I don't know what to call it, its a Black Y at the rear of the intake. Two bigger hose and one smaller one. It was leaking a bit and when I tried to move it, it broke. Audi dealler had it in stock, only $45. No change. Ohhh well.

I bit the bullet and bought a MAF. That was it, its been running perfectly for a few days now.

Power is much better, too.

Thanks for the help guys!!
