1996 Audi A4 Intermittent Starting Problem Help!!
It could be something stupid like a loose connection or the starter on its way out. But if the mechanic's cant get the car to do what your saying it does they cant diagnose it.
ok - then its not the starter. I'm guessing that they have read the codes in the computer and that did not give them any help. ???? don't know what to tell you - bad coil pack? fuel delivery problem(fuel filter, fuel pump)?
Does it smell like raw gas when it wont start?
Fuel delievery could be an issue like really clogged injectors.
I would think the car should miss fire if it was a coil pack?
1 of the o2's
MAF & throttle body are dirty as a ****?
So many options here.

The mechanic says it's either a problem of fuel delivery or absence of spark. However they can't tell until the car shows them the problem..... which may take weeks, or may happen tomorrow. This is one of the most frustrating problems...... anyone live in NC and want to buy a car?? :/
Another thing.... after it has trouble starting, and it starts on the third try (or so), a big cloud of black smoke comes out of the exhaust system.
Get them replaced - always a good idea, and since you have owned it for awhile now I'm sure its ready for a new set. tell them to see if the plugs are fouled(very black) or if they see any other problems with them. Your mechanic should also be able to do a spark test to make sure all the cylinders are firing.
