2004 2.8 timing belt and gallery plug

So my 2000 2.8 seems to be leaking a lot of oil - my local shop said the gallery plug needs replacing and that since they will be in there anyways, that I should get the timing belt, water pump, thermostat changed at the same time. In addition, they found the valve cover gasket and cam adjust plugs to be leaking.

All told - this is going to be $2200+tax ($1700 for timing belt, water pump, gallery plug and thermostat + $500 for valve cover gasket and cam adj plugs)

I really know very little about cars and was wondering if you guys think this seems reasonable.

I've been going to these guys for a few years now, and they seem legit, but $2200 is a lot to drop at one time.

Thanks

The timing belt charge is way high.

Usually an independent shop will do all that for around 800 (not including the gallery plug- whatever that is) The valve cover seems a little steep as well.

Maybe try another shop that works on vw/audi and see what they say.

quote around to find a good price. No matter how long you have been using their service, mechanics will still charge you as much as they can, sometimes may give you a soso discount to make you feel better.
I previously posted a similar thread about timing belt price, payed around $900 for belt and $800 for control arm/tie rod.

That's rediculous! The timing belt, wp and thermostat parts (everything you need) runs $155 at rockauto.com...

WTF is the gallery plug? Anyways, they're overcharging you.

Oil Gallery Plug

This is the one everyone is looking for to do their aftermarket oil pressure sender installation. This plug threads into the block in place of the plug with the hex head, and allows you to screw a standard 1/8" BSPT oil pressure sender (or other 1/8" BSPT item) into the oil gallery on the back of the engine block. A new aluminum crush gasket is included. $8:)
