There is a coolant level sensor, a red light with a thermometer symbol that will come on in the middle of your instrument panel if your coolant level exceeds the minimum. It should also come on when you turn the ignition key to on until you start your car. It is not a temp sensor really, however the manual says it is.You should have a temp gauge to the left of your fuel gauge.
Also look at www.audiDYI.com. It has a link to the actual coolant sensor mounted on the engine. Good pictures and description of how to replace. Good Hunting...

attached is the pic of how my coolant sensor looks after I took it out...
1996 A4 2.8 base.
well... the whole thing came apart all together as you can see in the pic. So the sensor is missing the metal bottom part, the one that goes inside the tube. The top part of the sensor is still stucked in the connector, and since I don't have a way to grab it with both hands, it's hard to tear them apart.
It came out like that, I really didn't pull it hard or anything... I think it was just too old and the whole thing was broken already...
What can I do to fix this. Any ideas on how to tear this two things apart?
