96 audi a4 oil light on
hello, i am new to audi's , my buddy recently bought a 1996 a4 2.8 fwd for me and the oil light came on shortly after the car had been bought, checked the oil and it is fine, replace the oil pres sending unit and had a engine flush performed and oil change done and still the oil light is present, now normally i would think bad pump but there is absolutely no mechanical noise coming from the engine to suggest lack of lubrication, as well the oil light will extinguish below 2500rpm's, anything over that though and it turns on, anyone have any suggestions of what i should do next, im currently stuck btwn a rock and a hard place b/c i dont want to drive it if the oil pump is going bad, but im in cali on buisness and having no car makes it incredibly difficult to get anything done, i am very mechanic experinced, i have use of a shop down here but i dont know if its worth the time to take the oil pan off and try cleaning the pump or to just replace it, as well if it is recommended replacing the pump, is there anyone that makes em besides audi, as it is very expensive part.
no the shop i have to use does not have a mech oil pres gauge unfortunately. but i find it weird because im assuming the sensor is a fixed type sensor where it turns on at a set threshold, i.e. when pressure drops below 5psi it will turn on ( i know its prolly not that low), but why would it then in turn come on at higher rpms, but shut off at lower?
bought me an audi with my own money unfortunately, i was in oregon he lives in cali, he thought it was a good a4 to buy so i gave him the money, so much for that theory thing is turning out to be junk imo, i gotta replace the fan clutch, it has a torn cv boot, it vibrates on the freeway and this damn oil light is gonna get the best of me.
What part of Oregon because In the portland Area I know two good places, On Beaverton Hillsdale Highway is a fatty BMW shop that is great with Audis and the Audi dealer is surprisingly fair. If you are southern Oregon, you should go to northern Oregon, both of thesm are quality and worth the 3 hour drive.
I'm new to Audis myself, but is this the "Oil Change" light I've seen mentioned? Maybe your last oil change didn't reset the indicator. Or maybe its oil pressure. I don't know.
im currently stuck in cali or i would fix it myself or take it to hillside imports, but anyhow im not using wrong viscosity oil, its 5w-30 synth which is what ive found is reccomended from most on this board, im thinkin maybe this is the beginning of the oil pump takin a ****, but i dunno, it just seems weird to me the oil pres sensor thinks everything is good at low rpms but not above 3k.
You need to test the oil pressure to be certain. Otherwise we could be giving you bum info. That being said, if you car isn't sounding like a honda (like mine did) then you should be okay for a little while.. . . .. What kind of workshop doesn't have at least 1 oil pressure gauge? They're like 60 bucks & are a very important part of any self sufficient workshop.
