99 1.8t A4 ran for 30 seconds - won't restart UPDATED
My buddy just called me and asked why his car will start for a few seconds then just die and not be able to be restarted. I was thinking coolant sensor - but without being able to VAG it I'm not sure what it could be. The CE light would flash when it died.
He has a 99 A4 1.8t and it has a bunch of mods - including a BT.
I told him to rent a scanner, but until I get the codes I wonder what it could be.
He's in MN, I'm in Iowa... so I can't easily VAG his car.

Flashing CEL=misfire
Sounds likea massive boost leak and is running way rich causing misfires/major spark plug foulage/flooding which is why it wont start back up right away. The plugs will dry after a while and then hed probably be able to start it again but the same thing would happen. Tell him to check the turbo outlet hose to make sure its still on, and also his intercooler piping and throtle body boot. I dont think bad coil packs or even a failing ICM would cause the engine to cut out.

This is my friends car and i've been trying to help him out on it. When he first told me about it, he said the problem was at idle and that when he drove the car it was fine, so i had him start it up and show me it. It was on for almost a minute running at 1000 rpms then it just cut off, that was the longest the car ran for us after that point the car dies instantly now though, it just revs up and cuts off cleanly for the most part. I check the intercooler lines and whatnot i wasn't able to find anything that was disconnected. We decided to replace the plugs and give it a oil change anyways. The plugs themselves were fouled, they had carbon on them up to about the 5th thread on all four of them and looked like a touch of oil. The car itself was definately running rich. We tried starting it again after for the heck of it to see and all five times it would start and die.

Is there a boost gauge? Whats it boost to if he can even get it going long enough to find out? There must be a boost leak somewhere. Did he check the turbo outlet hose? Why dont you tell this guy to sign up on here and get help instead of having middle men?

well he's just really at a loss for this. He said the boost was running 20-25 before but we can't get it to run long enough now. I checked the turbo outlet hose and it seemed to be fine but i think i'm going to try and take a peak at it again today.
