Default a4 suspension

can anyone tell me what the effect is of the front lower suspension arms being worn? I have a resonating sound while driving at between 25 and 45 mph.
I replaced the top 2 arms for the MOT which it has now pased. But this noise is driving me to distraction and I find it difficult to diagnose exactly where it is coming from!

The bushings in the control arms will dry out over time causing the loud squeaky noise. It will sound like 2 balloons rubbing together... try the search link at the top of the page, this has been an issue discussed plenty of times.

can you describe the sound better?

Usually if its speed sensitive, you probably need your tires balanced. how's your rubber? How new are your tires?

If older, they may be out of balance.

thanks for getting back to me and I have tried putting a better tired wheel but no improvment.

Further investigation (rocking the wheel back and forth on the ground) has revealed looseness-up/down and side to side, inside the wheel arch between the wheel and the car. I think this might be the wheel bearing looseness as have tested the 4 suspension arms and they are ok also the MOT test was passed.

Therefore if I get the 14MM socket could this be tightened to take up the slack? My manual say 140 lbs foot is required plus 180 degrees rotation - that is a lot of torque!

Has any one any experience of this, the bearing is not over heating so it must be ok. Does this slackness come from 120 k mileage?

sorry I am being silly - I will need to replace the bearing of coarse! Its a sealed unit unlike the adjustable conical bearing in the back wheel?
Has any one any tips?

Yes, it is a sealed unit. The bearings are a bear to press out. I purchased the bearings over the net for USD 55. My shop charged me 100 dollars to remove the right front bearing and press in the new set. Seeing how frozen everything was and the amount of work it took my mechanic to get everything loosened, I consider the money well spent.
