Default Affording an A4

Alright, so I'm looking in to getting an Audi. I'm looking at used A4's anywhere from 1999-2001. They all seem to have a lot of milage on them. around 90k. What I would like to know is, can I afford this car? What are the most problems down the road? I'm not rich, but I would really like a German car. I know everyone says to go Japanese, but I am REALLY over Japanese cars. They are all WAY overpriced, just living off their name. And I had an Infiniti that died on me and I'm just sick of em. What's the difference reliablity wise between a BMW and an Audi? I've hear BMW's are strong cars and they are not too problematic, and from reading these boards it looks like many say A4's are gonna be a HUGE $$$$ burden. Is this all true???

all german car parts are gonna run you more than the average, but I didn't have to tell you that. I'm sure you already knew. As for the reliability issue if you get a car with a clean bill of health and don't go out pounding on it, you won't run into to many problems. there are some issues thou that you should consider before buying an A4. the mantnace can become a burdin if you are not the type to get your hand in their. but if you are looking at cars with around 90K most of these thing should aready be taken care of. Let this post fester for a few days cus it seems to be realy dead right now. Oh yeah and welcome to our great forum.

It depends on how much you pay upfront for the car most of the time, if you are getting a REALLY good deal from a private seller, there is probably a reason for that.

I'm curious how much your going to spend on the car upfront. Are you looking at dealerships or private sales? where are you located?

You can also look at purchasing an independant warranty. They go for around $1400US for a 3yr 50k mile extended warranty.... this will save you from the big expensive repairs..... or if it is under 50k miles and 4yrs you can have it certified at your local dealership and have an extended Audi warranty for around $2k

keep looking i found a 2001 with 28K miles on it last Oct. ..... bought it right away

i've got 38K on it now

there are low milage b5's out there, you'll just have to search for a little.
and, oh, if you find one, don't expect it to be cheap.
people w/ low-milage b5's know what they have
the b5 is probobly still the most popular body style to date,

i paid 20K for my '01 last year
(it still was covered under origional Audi factory warrenty and free scheduled maint. at that time though which increased the price. and the factory sport pkge. on the '01 really makes it more desirerable, more desirerable = more expensive)

Thanks for the help you guys. I'm looking at buying from a dealer. I live in San Diego, but the dealer is in LA. I'm looking at a 2000 A4 with 90k miles on it for $9000. It is in GREAT condidtion and I was thinking of getting the extended warranty. I WILL NOT take any car I own into any dealership or repair shop, I do ALL work on my own. Most of the cars I've owned have been asain but I am very familiar with Jetta engines and such. I know the parts are more expensive but since I do all my own repairs, oil changes, and tuneups, Would this be wise to buy this or not? I really want this car, but some people are scaring me off. Thanks for the help!

If the car has been takin care of, you have nothing to worry about. The 1.8T is a very solid engine.

go for it but be prepared for some things to go wrong, just in case. i had to drop $350 to get my window fixed that wouldn't roll up, i hear that is a very common problem.
