For any b5 (with exception to year 96)considering buying a remote from ebay. You have two options, the four button remote with FCC# ending in 63, and the three button FCC# ending in 64. Either remote will work, I have both. For programming instructions check out the tech section of audiworld.com, search this forum, or simply google.

on the 4 button remote is the trunk open key functional for the normal b5? the owners manual says the truck release button is only for the avant wagons.

Does the 3 button's trunk release button work for 98.5 A4s?

The four button (trunk release) is functional for base model b5's equipped with the auto trunk release function. I believe its the 99.5 and above model years.

Does anyone know if the emergency key (the little plastic key) will work as the second key in reprogramming a new transmitter. I got one off of e-bay and I can't get the damn thing to work. I've seen 3 different versions of the instructions for reprogramming and tried them all to no avail. I would like this info before tearing into the e-bay seller for giving me an unworking key. Thanks for any input.

Thanks BadLuck, it still doesn't work, and I've replaced the batteries as well. I bought a 3 button remote despite the fact that my car came with the 2 button one, though through my research I'm convinced the 3 button should work anyway. I think I got a faulty remote, thanks again.

The following instructions are to reprogram your switchblade key fob.

1. Take a spare key and insert it into the ignition. Turn it one click forward.

2. Roll down your window just in case. Step outside the car, and lock the car with a second key.

3. With your second key fob press the unlock button. The lights should flash.

4. Now lock the car with the key fob, and then unlock it.

5. Remove the key from the lock and the key from the ignition, and try it's function

UPDATE OF AS 11/9/06

I called the dealer today to verify my part number. I did not give me my Security part number because he was able to give me a part number for my 00 A4 1.8tqm. He said that MOST 00 are 3 button, capable of using the trunk release. He asked if it had a power sunroof, so that must be one of their determining factors for what quarter production it was released in. Here is the part # that I received: 4D0 837 231 P 01C

If youre like me, you bought an A4, no matter the year, used from a private dealer or auction. Unfortunately, you only received one key right? And it wasnt one with the key fob, another right?

Well, a lot of the guys are saying just look on your key fob and inside will be the part number you need to purchase the right fob for your year. If you dont have one, then obviously you wont know. You be forced to ask on here and get a lot of different answers. Here's the thing Ive found that you could have two of the same production year cars with different fob part numbers. So, without at least one set, youre pretty much screwed. WRONG.... IF your car has the OEM Audi security sticker, on my 00 A4 1.8TQM its on both, driver and passenger side back door windows. On this sticker you'll see a Part #, that number corresponds to the key fob that you will need to program to get it to work with your OE alarm system.

Instead of trying to figure it out, you can look there, locate the part number and call the dealer to verify that A. They either have the part or B. That part number will work for your car.

Hope this helps on cutting down the confusion, remember Security Alarm sticker both back door windows.
From this I understand that the part number on the sticker doesn't actually correspond to the remote key fob part number? (Because this was said: "Here is the part # that I received: 4D0 837 231 P 01C"). So you will need to give your dealer this part number on the sticker and then they will supply you with a remote key fob? Because this doesn't really help as you can just give them you VIN anyway.

Or does this number directly correspond to the remote key fob part number? So eliminates the need to speak to the dealer and pay dealer prices for the remote? As my dealer won't give out any part info unless you purchase from them.

Justin.

I thought it was the "new" key you wanted locking the car from the outside... and your already programmed key you wanted in the ignition. Might be wrong tho...
