If you take it to the dealer yeah. They charge about 3.5 hours to change em.

it isn't especially cheap. there's kits available which include everything necessary to freshen up the front end, they usually go for around 500 USD. again, do some searching and you will educate yourself a bit.

check if the bushings are ok while your at it, the b5 model had a recall on them

that wouldn't help him, he has a B6. how can I check to see if there's a recall for my car?

I doubt it is. it's not a common item as far as I know, and if you can hear the noise when you're bouncing the suspension, it isn't the steering rack.
