Default Brake Light

I have a 1999 A4 1.8TQ. Ok so the brake lights work when my headlights are turned off but when i turn them on the brake light in the back also turns on and when i step on the brakes with the headlights on the brakelight does not change it just stays on even if my foot is not on the brake. Any ideas?

yeah the brake lights have two sensors on the bottom unlike the other bulbs back there. get the bulbs out and make sure that the break light bulbs are in the right place. also try to line up the sensors so that they are hitting the receptacles.

where in JerZ are you?

assuming yours are similiar to mine (2001) theres a piece of grey material covering the housing held on by some clips. pop them off pull it back. you'll see the a plastic thing held in by some clips. unplug it. unclip it. remove it. then the bulbs will be right in your hands. to remove them push down and twist. they should pop out.

i'm in manasquan we need to get a JerZ get together. Like they do in Cali, but on a much smaller scale! haha!

Either a short circuit in the system or failure of the brake light switch. Given that the brake lights work when the lights are off, id suggest it is a wiring problem. Does the third (centre) brake light work.

The simples thing would be to check the wiring at the lights and try some electrical contact cleaner on the connectors. After that it is trying to find the short.

I've got the same problem but i've also got the pre-heater light flashing when driving. The manual just says it's an engine management problem and to take it to a dealer's. I've checked all the fuses, there all ok. Help, don't want to pay dealership prices for what could possibly be a simple problem
