Even for an auto, that seems a little low. Plus at 84k there's the timing belt issue, so that hasn't been done we're talking about an extra 1-1.5k if you're not DIY.

First off...I'd say forget the automatic transmission - look for a manual.
Also, seriously consider Jeff's, I'm sure it's well maintained and up to date.
The timing belt doesn't seam too difficult but it'\'ll take you all of a full day to do it. I chose to have mine done at Renn=Art here in Chicago because I just don't have the time. They'll do it for about $700.

Yeah get those service records. All Audi/VW's between 1998-2003 with the 1.8T engines have the possibility of having oil sludge problems due to extreme oil conditions with turbo, oil capacity, sump etc etc.
Those records will save your *** if you need a new engine.
