Default CEL ON

I would like to know why some of you guys take the issue of having the CEL on more serious than others. Is it a commom problem with this cars ? At what point should one be concerned if the car runs god ? Also i a blinking CEL on more to concerned about than a CEl on all the time ?

basically its a warning that bigger things could happen very soon but this is nothing to do with Audi it happens to all newer cars that use OBD II and the CEL is there to prevent higher bills and make you look for the problem soon than when its too late

A blinking CEL usually indicates a missfire and you should stop driving to prevent damage to the cat. A solid CEL is just as important as it could indicate a lot of things, including a bad MAF sensor which can cause you to run lean and detonate-which is actually worse than missfireing. Either way when you have a CEL you should take your car to have the ecu scanned for fault the fault codes.

I posted a question last night. I have a 2000 A4 1.8T. it has 95k. I noticed a gas smell coming from the trunk are, but thought it would go away. Then I had the T- belt and water pump repleced. A day later my CEL went on, and I called the garage. The mechanic said it should be nothing related to the job he did. He mentioned the gas smell and thinks it is an evap line leaking. The car runs great but I am concerned a bout the smell and the CEL. The guy at the garage cleared the codes ( forgot to aske him which ones he found ) but when i took it for a test drive the smell was there and rhe CEL light went one 17 miles into the test drive. The smell of gas is not constant but it seams to be stonger as you shift un and down ( not so much on the hwy) however if you open the trunk when you stop driving the car you can really smell the gas . Any advise on how to address the issue ?

If the CEL is back on, there will be codes again. Get it scanned.

you deserve an answer the problem could be the top of the fuel sender unit which is metal and the tank is plastic ( metal rusts ) other points to look for are rotted fuel lines even the smallest pin hole and common near the rear of the car they rust like a skoda or used to lol

Ok... Thats one highly unlikely answer of many possibile solutions, but the best way to pin point it would be to get the ecu scanned. I dont see how suggesting to get the ecu scanned is an undeserving answer???
