Check Engine Light - Transmission Sensor!!! HELP
I have a 04 Audi A4.... I was debating the extended warrenty or not but since I have had it for 2 yrs and have had NO problems with it and I know that I kept up with the maintenance regularly, I decided against it. Wouldn't you know it that the car just turned 50,100 miles and the check engine light comes on. Took it to Audi and they said it was a Transmission Sensor. $2000 to replace it cause they have to remove the Transmission to get to it. The check engine light comes on for about 3 days or so and then turns off for about a week and then comes back on.
Is this sensor anything that would greatly damage my car continuing like this?
Also, I am considering taking my car to Audi (while the check engine is off) and adding the extended warranty then and when the light comes back on, having them fix it. (I know it's alittle going around the system but it's a $2000 sensor and the warranty is $3400.) They will have to do a diagnostics on the car. Will the previous problems show up or will they turn me down on the warranty for any reason?

If the extended warranty company finds out about that visit they can deny the claim based on a prexisting condition. Might be some sort of fraud as well. In any case if you take the car in within the first month of purchasing the contract they will deny it on it being a preexisting condition. Also you wont really know if the part is covered until the dealer submits the claim to the warranty company. Not everything is covered.
Let me guess you have a fwd car that needs a transmission control module?

yes, that is right. I have fwd and to the best of my knowledge (which is not much when it comes to cars) it is the transmittion control module. that is what the audi print out says. Can you tell me what this part is and how critical this is to the well being of my car?
It really depends on the fault. There are a bunch of sensors connected to the module. One just tells the trans what gear its in. It may have failed so intermitantly that you never noticed it. However it could fail permantly causing the trans not to operate at all or in limited capacity. Theres a few speed sensors on the module that are critical to smooth trans operation. If they arent working transmission life can be greatly diminished.
If you are not adamant about going with Audi for repairs, look into an Audi Independent shop. It could save you a lot of money and still have a quality job done, depending of course on the shop.
