when i turn on the engine the lights are red and bright as they should be but when i put on dipped or main beam then lights all dim down and it is virtually unreadable is there a dimmer switch anywhere??? or what could it be???

Yeah it's either the little rod coming out of the cluster (B5 models) on the left or the plus/minus symbols (B6's).
