i have tried to fit some projector headlight to my 97 a4 today
they were meant for the 98-01 models
the only thing stopping me was a part of the wing that folds in a bit behind the indicator, its about 10mm deep
it look like they would fit, if i trimed this bit off with an angle grinder
any views, opinions, tips etc

The one piece started in the 99.5 model year. You'll have to fab/grind/saw a small piece off the fender to make them fit as well as redo the wiring connection. Not difficult, here are a few DIY articles that will help.
