Default DIY Euro one piece headlights for 96-98 for $260

Do you have this?

And want this?

Then read my step by step procedure below.

First purchase a set of euro spec one piece headlights on ebay from ivm1 seen here
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AUDI-...QQcmdZViewItem

Remove headlights without having to take off front bumper with the following:

Remove sidemarker lights by using a screw driver in the hole to push the tab down and it will slide toward the front of the car. You can unscrew the lightbulb assembly and it will be used in the new headlights.

Next is the old headlight removal using a torx bit on the top 2 bolts and I used a vise grips on the side screw because my torx wouldn't fit between the bumper and the housing.

Now the headlight assembly will pull out. There is a clip that holds the plug together for the headlight bulb wiring. Pullthe clipout and unplug the assembly. Set assembly aside and remove a 4th torx screw that is on the inside of the headlight opening.

Now unplug the wiring from the actual headlight bulbs and remove wiring from assembly. You can use this time to put the bulbs from the old assembly into the new one. DONT Touch the actual bulbs with your fingers. Once the bulbs are switched to the new assembly, you can plug in the wiring that was removed from the old assembly and do a test run with inserting the turnsignal bulb into its opening also.

Everything should be working if it was working in the old set. Now comes the fun of grinding away the part of the fender that the old sidemarker was using as a backer. There are a couple of ways to do this, I used a $15 4 1/2 inchangle grinder with a metal grinding wheel. Make sure to wear glasses and be careful of hopping. (I knicked a part that I didn't want grinded, but I am eventually getting it repainted anyway, but I wish that it didn't happen.)

Even that much grinded was not enough. It needed a little more to clean it up. There can be no lip when looking right at it. (You can see my booboo too)
Now another test fit and on to rewiring.

Now, the following directions are a little hokey, but it worked when I was done and I didn't spend any extra $$ which was critical for me.

First was to snake the wiring from the center hole to the outer hole through the inside. You can then put the center cap on. Next for me was unclipping the plug assembly from the outer cover.

Once that plug assembly was removed, I pulled the wires out of it. Then I used a screwdriver to open up three larger holes to get my headlight wires through. (Yellow, white and double brown)

I got the wires out of the plug by busting the pink clip and using a needlenose pliers to grab them and pull them out. You can see that one is tapedbecause I chewed it a little with the pliers. Now you can push the yellow, white and double brown through and clip the plug assembly back into the cover and put the cover on.

You can either put them back into the plug that they came out of or put the male back into the female end that is still hooked to the car and then put the male parts back through the male and into the female. (that is what I did and used a needle nose again) When looking at the female, there is a big hole on the bottom (Brown [ground]) and two mediums top left and right. Right is your regular lights and left is your high beams. I have seen most people use the center light as regular lights so whichever wire was coming off of that light bulb is the one that you would put on the right of the female plug.

You want to put that sidemarker bulb assembly back in before you put the headlight assembly all the way back in. I did one more test of the lights before putting the 2 top screws back in. Then you are done!

Any questions you can email me at jwc4th@yahoo.com

Nice write up. Thats exactly what I did, except chipping the paint off the fender. I also had the right connector so the wiring was easier.
