Engine Malfunction Indicator Light.
Hey Guys,

could useyour insight here.

So, I had my Engine Malfunction Indicator Lightflashing the other day. Of course there was rough idle and misfiring. Took it for diagnostic tests and apparently the results were that the power going into the output stage was not exciting #2 terminal. Hence, internal electircal fault needing to replace power output stage.

So i guess my first question is, was this the right correction? secondly, how much would this piece cost, given that its for a 1998.51.8t QTR??

i appreciate your helpfulcomments coz i wanna know if i got hosed!!!

Sounds like a bad coilpack new_audi_guy. If you lost one you would be running on one less cylinder and you would feel rough idle and misfires.

I think they go for around 50 bucks, likely more at the dealer. Coilpacks are a known issue on Audis, though not so common a problem on a 98.5.

By the way - a flashing Check Engine Light means the problem is hazardous to the car's health if you continue driving it. If it is not flashing then you can drive it and have it checked out.

I just took my car in last tuesday for the MIL Light flashing. Actually it had to be towed in. I have 02 A4 with 21,000 miles. Dealership claims that the ignition coils are bad in my car. this car is a piece of crap. It's been in the shop for a total of 47 days since I bought it with one thing after another wrong with it. Thank god it's all under warranty. As of now, I'm trying to get Audi USA to either buy it back from me or give me a new one.

What a lemon!

Engine Malfunction Indicator Light.
thnx for the reply brrman...

well thats what i thought the prob was but of course the part only costs $50 so it CANT be the problem according to the dealer

he said that the power output stage going to the second coil was messed up, so i had to buy a new power output stage.....k, that was CDN$570!!!

im sure i got ripped off...but how can you be sure what the prob really was? it was the worst possible timing coz my usual mechanic, who happens to be a top mechanic who works on ferraris, porsches, lambourgs etc (and more importantly is a friend), was out of town!!!! well its fixed now and ihave a new part so....(thats how i comfort myself)

RE: Engine Malfunction Indicator Light.
Hello,
I have an Engine Malfunction Indicator Light staying on all the time. However, I do not see anything wrong with the car. The 'Owner's manual' points out that the emmision control has a malfunction. Is there any way to reset the Engine Malfunction Indicator Light ?
The weird thing is that the light was on for a week. Then disappeared by itself for a week or two. Now it is on again all the time. Any suggestions?
If I need to go to repair shop, what estimate cost should I expect?
Thanks,
Peter

RE: Engine Malfunction Indicator Light.
I have the same problem in my 2002 1.8t q. I think it maybe due to bad sparkplugs. that light seems to come on when im on about 4th gear doing 30mph, not utilizing the engine power more or less cruising throttle position, and with it at a higher gear at cruize speeds its not getting enough air to fully combust the fuel. so maybe a simple tuneup might help. my light goes on and off too its three times now. and each time i checked it it said inefficient catalytic converter. if it goes on and off i think like i said it needs new plugs air filter, but if it stays on then i think it is a dirty o2 sensor maybe need to replace that for about 80-140 depending on which one you buy
