I have a similar ticking noise, I can'f figure out if it's the hydraulic lifters, or valve tap or something else, in the end what was the problem? thanks, Browndognj.

Join the club. My B6 is also doing that now. Sound like it coming from the side of the engine closest to the firewall.

If the ticking is coming from the airbox area, there is a valve there that ticks when air goes through it, the ticking means its working.. And should be pretty mild but noticeable with the hood open. Other ticking could be from the cam tensioner on the firewall/top side of the engine. If the tensioner gets worn out the chain slaps around and hits the valve cover (this is seperate form the timing belt on the front/radiator side of the engine.) Other than that, it could be valves that need adjustment, or your hydrolic oil lifters. A good first stp is changing the oil, or doing an engine flush. All this has been covered many times and you can read more about it and other peoples experiences with it by searching "engine noise." Or "ticking." Or "cam tensioner chain" etc.

See, I thought mine was the cam tensioner since it's coming from the top of the engine by the firewall. Just need to take the time to get it done one weekend.

If your gunna do it yourself make sure you get a couple good DIY articles or engine tear down diagrams.. its not as easy or cheap as you might think.. But thats just what ive heard.

I hope to figure it out one of these days. Like you said, I'll be doing lots of checking into it before I dive in head first.
