Enquiring about possible 1996 A4 purchase!

Hi,

I thought this would be the best place to come and find some information I might need to know about purchasing an A4.

Okay well I have seen one A4 I am quite interested in and here are the details of the car:

It is an AUDI A4 2.6 V6 SE (What does the SE stand for by the way?)

Transmission is 5 Speed Automatic
Year Model: 1996
Engine Size: 2.6
It has 161,233 KM's on the clock
Colour: BLUE

And here are the listed features:

It has Driver air bag, passenger airbag, anti-lock braking, air conditioning, automatic air conditioning / climate control, alarm system / anti theft remote control, alloy wheels, compact disc player, central locking, fog lights, leather trim, power mirrors, power steering, power windows, radio cassette with 6 speakers and a sun roof.

Okay so I was wondering what I should look for when I go back to look at this car, unfortunately I do not know much about audi's but am very keen to learn. I know that with mercedes they have the classic, elegance, avantgarde etc option packages and I was wondering what options are good to have in the Audi or if there is a similar kind of system with audi's (that may be what the SE stands for?)

Also this car has 161,233 km's is that much of a problem?

Is there any kind of update models around the 1996 model?

What problems should I expect to come across around the 160,000 km mark?

I will greatly appreciate any light you can shed on my questions.

Thanks :)

Oh yeah and this car is in australia by the way if that makes any difference!

Your steering wheel is on the wrong side!!! Just kidding. :) First off, make certain that the timing belt service has been completed around the 112,000km point. If not then you HAVE to get this done. It is an expensive job too. Around $600-800USD. Next on the list is the control arms and tie rods. Push down on all 4 corners of the car and see if there are any squeeks. I would recommend taking the car for a test drive and dropping it off at a trusted mechanic for an hour. Most dealers have no problem with this.

If available, have someone with a VAG-com check for stored codes.

Also plan on spending several hundred if you buy the car on changing all the fluids in the transmission, drive train, steering.

Is the car Quattro or FWD? My opinion is that if you are going to purchase an Audi you should purchase a quattro version. You may also want to buy the 1.8 L turbo version as it will get you getter gas mileage.
