Default Flange on the cat popped off. A few exhaust questions

The flange on the cat at the turbo side poped off a few days ago. Everything is welded and back together now. I was kinda getting used to it. It sounded like an old farm tractor. When I took the cat out and got the flange back on it didnt appear that there were any weld spots. Is this supposed to be welded or just a press fit? I just didnt see any weld marks anywhere. From doing some searching it seems to be a common problem.

Also what is the purpose of the down pipe? There is a mesh like thing half way down. What is this for? I didnt see anything special about it other than that but see people talk about it quite a bit. Why cant this be a straight pipe from the cat?

The metal mesh is known as a flex joint. this allows the downpipe to flex to a certain degree so it wont break things (like any joints) when placed under stress.

Thanks, that makes sense. I have never seen this on other makes was why I though it was a little strange, unless it is something on newer vehicles.

When I removed my intermediate muffler I would definitely have broken the pipe off at the cat if it weren't for that section of flex pipe.

Yeah, my metal mesh is fraying, im just going to get a downpipe and replace it instead of buying the oem part.

I probably should have hollowed mine out when I had the chance. I was just going to go with a test pipe and new exhaust this spring anyway.
