Default Gas smell?

Sometimes when I'm driving I smell gasoline.. it's pretty strong sometimes. Then sometimes I don't smell it at all??? any ideas what this could be? I never noticed this before..

in your trunk, in front of the spare tire, there should be a cap that leads down into your gas cap...check to make sure it's secure.

Hey I checked that area out in the trunk and it's secure.. How would I go about checking the Evap system? Or if it's an exhaust leak how do I pinpoint it?

Could also be a crack where filler neck goes int tank. I have this on ny a6 avant. Whenever I fill the tank there is a gas smell until the gas is below that level.

It is a very labor intensive job to drop the tank, so I just dont fill it up 100%

do you only smell it when you have the heat or ac on? cause if thats the case its prob the evap system, had that on my dakota... the dealer actually left a hose off after it went in for a service.

I'll have to try out the heat/ac thing, I don't think it had any relation to that, however the filler neck sounds more like what I have because it does go away sometimes, and when the tank is low i don't smell it. If it's an expensive repair I'll just live with it as long as it isn't causing any harm to my car.
