Gear shifter problem - Please help
I have an auto-tiptronic A4 B6.
When i re-started the car today, and put it in automatic drive mode "D", the car did not select the gear mode as "D", rather is recognizing it as Manual mode showing "5 4 3 2 1". The gears will only change automatically at very high RPM's (more than 5000). If i try to change the gears from the steering wheel, nothing happens.
When i change it to Manual mode, nothing happens. It stays the same way, in Manual mode without the ability to change the gear.
The only way for me to change gears right now is to take the car to neutral "N" and put it back into "D" (which now is manual mode). This way the appropriate gear is selected and displayed.
This had happened a year ago and the problem had resolved on its own after driving the car for a few hundred miles.
Please help!!!! Thanks

If on your dash, all of the gear numbers are backlit (ie the background is lit up and the numbers are back, the opposite of how they ususlly appear), then your transmission has gone into safe mode. The only gears that will work are 4th, reverse and neutral. If so, that is an indication of a potentially serious problem with the transmission, the transmission control module or the connections between the ECU and the TCM. Have the transmission module checked with a vagcom for transmission codes. These will not show up with an OBDII scan or at autozone. When is the last time you had your transmission fluid level checked or changed?
If it is stuck in tip mode, there are mgnetic strips in the shifter that tell the car whether it is in tip or auto. These sometimes fall off or get loose.

All the gears are working because when i change the gear from Neural to D, the system is selecting the correct gear it should be in. I will have to probably have it vag checked but from what you have told me, its the magnetic strip. I had the same problem an year ago, but it auto-corrected itself. Thanks, but would love to hear what others have to say as well. Regards
