gearbox input shaft audi A4 1.8t feb 2003

i have been told by audi that my a4 requires a gearbox input shaft at £1397 . what is it , and does anyone know why its failed.
mileage on the car is 76000 so no warranty although the car isnt three years old yet. i`m pushing the dealer for a freebie .
thanks

has the gears stopped working? at that price I would look around you can get a complete gearbox for less than half that,

this is not your gearbox just a glimpse at whats the input shaft is

no the gear box hasnt stopped it just shudders about 1800 revs mainly in gears 1-4 ands under 40mph .
quote from audi dealer is that the input shaft is faulty .

I cant see that being the input shaft, you still have a manufacturers warranty "3yrs" , this sounds more like clutch judder so possible new clutch but a lot cheaper get a second opinion;)

Thanks , the car is an 6 speed auto with triptonic gearbox . they took a second opinion from aui UK in milton keynes and ran diagnostics over the phone .
i`m afraid im not any good at cars and i just feel that i`m being ripped off by the dealership.and i hoped someone would be able to give me some guidance
the car is out of warranty as i have 76000 on the clock albeit only 2 3/4 years old .
do you think i`m being ripped off .
thanks again

Yeah, you certainly are getting ripped off. Try an independent mechanic if the dealer won't give you a break. that's like 2400 dollars for an input shaft? Ridiculous. Good idea coming here first.

I'm not into the tiptronic stuff its too new for me but cant see how Audi could say its definitely the input shaft without exploration even I'm not that confident, in the trade we call this a wash over meaning its a guess;) a very poor diagnostic excuses to blame it on something else to justify the excessive cost when the problem is minor, take it elsewhere and get a diagnostic check and read out which should be done on a rolling road set up "Audi don't have the gear for that", gearbox is no area to guess whats wrong you need to know the facts because of the expense these jobs cost;)

Well maybe its different in the UK but in the states Audi didnt have a 6 speed auto in the A4 3 years ago

And also here we do nothing to the transmission except replace them or the torque converter
