Default hello, need some help

Hello everyone, im looking forward to buying a 1st gen A4, preferrably a V6q. I've read in a few places that their motors had a major hp gain either in 1997 or 2001 - not sure which exactly for both 1.8 and 2.8 engines?? And i've seen some that have a 3-spoke steering wheel, some with silver trim, some with wood, some have a different center console... What years did these changes occur?

Start here:

http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng35.shtml

HP gains were 98 for the V6 when it went from 12 valves to 30 valves, and in 2001 when the 1.8T went from 150 to 170 hp.

I think the 3 spoke steering wheel is the sport steering wheel. This may have been an option on non sport vehicles. This is the steering wheel you want though.

Dunno about trim, I thought it was just an option.

I don't know what your budget is, but I would suggest a 2001 1.8T. Sport package gets you tighter/lower suspension, sport rims and sport steering wheel. Get the sport package if you aren't going to upgrade the suspension. 2001 had the most HP and had the fog lights down in the grill which I think looks a lot better (99.5 to 2001 have the fogs in the grill). 1.8T is best for modding. Even if you aren't into modding much, you can buy just a chip for the 1.8T and produce HP numbers around or better than the 2.8 for about $500 (no good chip available for the 2.8).

The 2.8 has the fake wood trim and real leather, the trim looks darker in the 99+ years. The 1.8T has the leatherette and silver trim. On both models the console changes to the bose stereo system on the 99+ years. The exterior also changes slightly clicky...I also suggest the 1.8T like TDRILL said.
