help!!! don't know if my tranny is blown or drive axles
I'm still a newbie but here's my problem guys I have a 96 a4 2.8q with 96k miles. I installed a clutch in septmeber n everything was fine except the linkage I guess was a a little bit off or unadjusted so in 1st gear I had 2 hold it there but every other gear no issues @ all just didn't have any1 reliable 2 fix it for me. So I was driving the other day and was hearing some thumps under the front of the car but really didn't pay ne attention and the car pulled to the right as I was driving and then later I made a turn heard a thump sound and I wasn't able 2 move the car. It goes in all of the gears but it won't move what could this be ? When I put it in the gears to try and move it just winds sorry the long post need help asap please thank you
don't knwo if its this, but sounds like the prob i had with my 2.8, i snapped my driver side axle, and what was happening was that the diff woudl send all the powerto that oen cus it spun the easiest, so none of the other wheels were getting any power... when you shift it into gears, does your speedo go up? haha i got mine to go to 160mph in 5th gear without moving anywehre lol.
Lol yea the speedometer goes up. So its not the trans or nething like that? Its the front axles? Would it be right or left and how do I check
yeah if speedo goes up, your tranny is fine, because the speed sensors are after the transmition... and basically to check, just lift the car p with a jac from one side or something crawl under by a wheel and spin it, if the wheel spins and the axle doesn't... there is your answer, its most likely one of your fronts because it broke during a turn.
Thanx a lot I sure hope its just the axle wouldn't be hard 2 fix nor expensive.....I hope lol yea 2 bad my car is in the driveway and we got like 6 inches of snow n its still coming down but if its not the axle wat else could it be? Linkage, drivetrain?
i'm 99% sure its the axle, because if your speed is reading a number, that means that the axles are moving, but the wheels are not, could also be your CV join but thats part of the axle.
Alright thanx a lot yea the rpms go up and while its in the gear its winding ...very unpleasant sound ya know n like I said the car pulled to the right(passenger side) and prior 2 that I was hearing some noises coming from by the tires in the front. I put in a new clutch in september I prob didn't tighten the axle all the way or something
Thanx a lot guys hope this is 100% lol I looked under didn't see nething irregular but I'm no car expert hopefully I get it fixed this week so I can go try and trade for a b5 s4 lol got a good local deal on sum parts
