How much power can a 1.8t aeb take?
I think about 400 or so crank horsepower before you should replace the rods. The rods are the weak point. Pistons, pins, rings etc. are rock solid. I don't know of anyone who's gone higher than that without building the engine, but I'm pretty sure the AEB can take a **** load of punishment.
If you overboost, then you're going to blow your motor. I think that's what happened to Tom; he didn't have a way to control the turbo's boost, so it exploded his engine. If you make 400hp on a good tune, all you need to replace for ultimate reliability is the rods.
Oh yeah def, overboosting is a killer. I sent 2# rod out the side of my motor, due to a lack of coolant and way to much boost. I still dont know how i did it either. One day it was boosting 30plus for no apparent reason.
