Well I want to put in my two cents.

I have done my V6 2.8 A6 3 times now and I found the first time easy enough 4 hours. Now I can do it in about 2 hours. If you use blauparts.com you can get instructions, rent the twin cam lock out tool, and get the whole kit of water pump tensioner, belt and all.

As for can I just do the belt? Well the reason I have done my 3 times is because to First time I went with just the belt, then about 5000 miles later, the water pump went. Do it all at once, it was all built to last about the same amount of time. The third time was my second belt (because Audis last)

The tricky part on the A4s is that they are squished in, so according to most of the posts about it, you have to pull the bumper and radiator to do the job.

I can send you a write up on how to do it, but I have posted it on this site like 5 times now and most people don't listen anyway.
LOL

Well, looks like mine was the cheapest deal ever....... atleast I think so....

I got all these parts replaced for $1200

1) Timing belt
2) Water pump
3) All front control arms on driver side (upper and lower). I think the qty is 8
4) Engine Oil Change
5) Sway bar
6) Radiator flush

Hi guys, can someone recommend a reliable Audi indy mechanic in the New Orleans area, esp. around the 70094 zip code?

A friend of mines lives there, and he took his 1996 A4 to an Audi dealership. They want $1,700 for replacing the timing belt & performing a general inspection. I think it's excessive, but my friend knows zippo about cars and it shows.

I told him that a timing belt replacement should run $400-$700, and an inspection about $100. I would gladly do all of that for him myself, but I live 1.000 miles away. So if you know of a good independent garage around New Orleans, please let me know.

TIA.

ya timing belt should not cost more than 800. if it does than they are ripping you off. decent price is 700-750. anything under 500 i wouldn't trust and anything over 1k is just plain rapage

$850? You got screwed. SERIOUSLY people, buy the kit from ECS tuning, $250 and plan a weekend for it, its REALLY not that hard. I've never worked on my car and I did it just fine. If your not a bumbling idiot you can do this yourself and save a ton of money.
