I quit smoking but my car picked up the habit!
Hey there all, I have a 2001 A4 1.8T manual that's having an smoke issue. Here's the deal, the car is all stock and runs great but likes to throw smoke out the exhaust especially when it has warmed up and I let it sit then restart it. It burns through a quart of oil every 750 miles or so. Now the smoke coming out is white, not blue and I haven't noticed a real power loss. My Audi mechanic is rather confused, he's not sure if it's the valve seals or possibly the turbo going bad. Either way I'm prepared to dish out $1000 if I have to since I can't stand the sight of that smoke and especially the smell when I'm stuck in traffic. The car has 105K on it now and had synthetic oil from 85K to 103K before I switched to a blend to try and see if it would help going back to a conventional oil. It never had the smoke problem previous to switching to synthetic and that's why I tried the blend. Audi USA had me go synthetic after they warrantied the sludge issue you all know about. Any thoughts on this would be most appreciated.

i think it could be the blend. and y do u want to go back to conventional? ur gonna sludge up if u do. try changing it back to full synthetic and see wut happens.
I don't want to go back to conventional at all, thats why I tried the blend. This past oil change was a test to see if the smoke would stop or at least decrease -- nope. I change the oil regularly and had at least 3 changes with synthetic before I went this route. I've used Mobil 1 in the past and don't feel like another brand will make a difference, do you agree?
i doubt brand will make a huge difference but the type will. and all i use is Mobil 1 too. try running seafoam through the gas first. so u currently have 2k on the blend? if so run seafoam through the crank and intake. i think u might be running rich. do u smell gas?
Are you SURE that you dont have, say, twice the amount of oil in the crank case as there should be? This just never happens to 1.8T's unless the turbo is shot. A blown head gasket is pretty much an impossibility on a 1.8T, as is severe compression loss (bad rings) or anything else that would cause smoke like that.
it's like gumout except it's alot better and u can run it through the intake, crank and gas tank. it'll clean out crap just in case the smoking is from a dirty car. it's like 6 bux a bottle. it's def worth. just don't use as much as the bottle says. use one bottle for those 3 parts of the car. if u do a search u'll see how much fun u can have with seafoaming the intake hehehe
would a turbo that's on its way out last that many miles? im just trying to see if cheaper solutions can be conjoured up before having to spend a grand u kno wut i mean?
