Default ignition coils

I am trying to determine if any others have experienced multiple coil failures (4 or more) on their A4 1.8T. After each of my 4 original coil packs failed and were replaced with the new and improved "J" series coil packs, I still blew another one 2 weeks ago!!(( am actually on my 3rd set of coils)I am wondering if anyone else has had similar problems and am also looking for opinions to see if it is possible that defective engines are causing the coil packs to blow rather than vice versa. Would love to hear from everyone and anyone....I am at my wit's end with this problem.

Mars,

I feel your pain.A couple years ago my friend sold his nearly brand new 2001-2 Jetta, that has the exact same motor (1.8T), because it stranded his wife and kidtwice due to coil failures. You don't state what year you have but from what I have heard, the 2001/2002 are the coilproblem years. From what I understand it is the coil design, specific for those model years, so alternative year coils that are not problematic will not fit. It's not your engine.

I believe the alternative is to get away from the OEM style coil and go aftermarket. BRMN could probably confirm this, BRMN??? He turned me on to ECSTUNING.COM. They have good pricing and I believe they offer aftermarket coils. AUDI probably says the coils they are circulating now are "right" but if you could blowing them, you know better.

Good luck,

Thanks for your input Scott. My car is a 2002 1.8T quattro. The car is still under warranty so I am reluctant to go with an aftermarket coil. It is just strange to me that I have blown through both sets of coils (the original "H" series and the replacement "J" series which is why I have my suspicions that something else is causing these coils to blow, rather than just simply a defect in the coils they are installing! It is absolutely infuriating....I have begun a Lemon Law action against Audi (as many others have), but they are adamant that cars are fixed after recall. I apparently have proven them wrong when I blew a coil that was replaced as part of the recall!!

Actually if you have the updated coils you should not be blowing them. The problem was how they were being assembled in the plant. They were being tapped together with a mallet which put stress on a sensitive connection. That process was changed and the new coilpacks are supposedly not failing.

Now, I have never had one fail on my 98.5 (knock on wood). I don't know if the updated ones are better or not. I am not sure if there are any non-audi aftermarket coilpacks out there, but people have had success with the updated ones.

You know that Audi had a complete recall on your model year right? Call them and see if they will replace them for you. They are replacing the old ones now even before they fail.

I don't think you will win a lemon law case based on just coil packs.

Default ignition coils

There is a company that makes aftermarket coil packs twice as much initial spark a 4 times as much secondary spark but I believe they only make them for AEB engines and I cant remeber there name cost $600 if I recall corectly

Yeah, I see that they don't make aftermarket coils for that newer A4. However, I do note that they are up to revision "L". That might tell you something. You state your last set was rev "J".

I'm sorry, but I don't put much faith in dealers and their supply chains. They can say they fixed it all they want. Where did the bad ones in the supply chain go? Did they go back to QC, get checkedandrestamped? Conspiracy theories, I know. Butmy feeling is it's the coils. Having just dealt with those circuits on my '98 and having a bit of knowledge of how the system works, I can't see how your ECM, Ign control module/Coil amp or wiring be doing this. Even if it was a bad ground at the coil itself, stressing it (on all four, randomly???)

Anyway, I hear you Mars. You got a new car and it's dumping on you. I'd say get Audi to keep puttingcoils on it until you get a batch that don't crap out on you. Meanwhile, hang in there and try to enjoy the car...

My 2 cents...
