Default Ignition Control Unit

What does the Ignition Control Unit do?...And would this prevent spark?

Ignition Control Unit (ICU) or Ignition Control Module (ICM) distribute the spark to the right cylinder.
So.. it basically control the ignition of the compressed A/F mixture inside the engine.

It will accomplish the same thing teh good old distributors does without anything mechanical.

No it won't prevent spark, the ICM is known as the power output stage to the germans.

Correct it sends the power to component when needed. It can cause one hell of a misfire though. Why do you ask.
