I'm having a mid-car crisis.
Recently, I've been having some second thoughts about my car. I knew when I got it that it wasn't a fast car, but now its really dawned upon me how slow it really is. Short of a BTK, there's not much to really do to get it as fast as I want, and then it doesn't hold the same reliability of a stock motor. So I've been thinking about getting my car all cleaned up all my dents fixed/removed, and selling it. KBB is $15,000. I think I want to sell it because everything seems to be going wrong with it suddenly. My left tail light cluster seems to lose a bulb just about every day (I just stopped replacing them now), one of my foglight lenses shattered when I went down a steep driveway at almost zero mph - obviously too fast. My clutch feels like it is going to give out soon even though I baby it 95% of the time.
I want to use the money to put a downpayment for a CPO 2004 or 2005 STi.
Now I feel like a traitor to German cars. I love the look and styling of them, and tend to dislike Japanese cars, but the Subaru seems like a good car, good platform the mod. The exhaust note gives me a hard on. I always told myself I would never sell my A4, but now I really want to.
Convince me to not sell the A4, or to atleast stick to the German brand. I really like the BMW M3, but I wouldn't be able to afford a newer E46 and I'd worry about the long term reliability in buying an older E36 M3 with higher miles.
Audi's are awesome cars, and I love them, but I really don't want to own one right now.
ETA: I'm also approaching the first timing belt milestone. Not really looking forward to that.

Im not going to try to convince you cause im in the same boat there awesome cars but reliablity sucks and isnt worth putting $$$ money into fixing them when you can be using the money on a more reliable car for modding it. It seems like everytime i get some money together to but something performance wise i need to fix something to keep the stupid bitch running. They suck most of the time and its a huge money pit. Go with another car if you dont have extra cash laying around and i dont know too many people that do.
I'm really just wishing someone would total my car for me. Maybe someone could do good rear ender on me, bend the frame up a bit. Aside from the deductable, it gives me a chance to start over.
I think you are considering a smart possibility. Your emphasis for speed appears to be key along with sound reliability and value for money. The obvious 2 choices are the STi and the Evo. I love and respect both cars (I own a 05 STi) and either would meet your needs, and exceed your performance desires. However, if you are concerned about reliability/durability then go with the STi because it is bomb-proof and will last along time, nevermind how much you throw at it. The Evo may not hold up quite as well. Good luck
Well, all this is really hinged on my parent's signing the car over to me when I take over finacial responsibility for it (I'm not so much worried about my dad, its my mom that would happily take it away at a whim to 'teach me a lesson') and ability to hold a steady paycheck through college to make car payments - I don't want to go back to a less than honorable career to make ends meet.
If only problem is less hp to sell your audi, it meas you have no idea what audi can you with a small amount of money
if you have other reasons to have a different car, then good luck.

My A4 is paid for (very important
) and I expect more bang for buck (in styling, interior, power, AWD fun) over just about any vehicle available.I think I made a good choice for myself, but time will tell.
I'll save a car payment for a Porsche 911 GT3 or something.. hahaha

the front end of the STI's look like fu@k off and lets not even get me started on how much of a POS BMW's are but with your price range you are looking at I would be looming at a 04 S4 or something like along those lines much nicer car for the money
