Just bought a 04 A4 - what do you recommend
Hi guys, I've been reading up on alot of things lately to try to find some good ideas and wanted to post up.
I just bought a 04 A4 1.8T avant quattrowith tip. The car is stock w/ the perf package, 40,000 miles. While I'm saving for the GAIC chip (few weeks) what do you guys recommend. I have no history on this car so I'm going to change plugs, install K & N filter, and change the tranny fluid (its starting to act up alittle)
So what else would you do when bringing home a used car? Can I go to any Audi dealership and give them my vin # to see if they have service records? I dont know if audi does that or not.
Any recomendations would help.
Thanks
Chris

How is the tranny acting up? Make sure you get a good diverter valve before you get the chip, a Bosch 710N or better. Tranny fluid/filter would be my #1 priority. If you DIY, follow these articles to a T:

http://www.taligentx.com/passat/maintenance/atfchange/
They are for the Passat and A8, but same procedure.
If you dont have vag com to monitor ATF temps, just let the engine run for 15-20 minutes when topping off at the end of the procedurelike the article says. Make sure to use full synthetic oil and when chipped, change over to some copperNGK BKR6E plugs gapped to .028. Its not a must, but copper is best to use with high boost/high heat. Theyll need changed every 10k miles or so, but are easy to replace and are cheap as hell.
Definately hit up the dealer for any service records. They will also be able to tell you what recalls there have been and if your vin was serviced for any of them. Im pretty sure it was just the 03's, but double check on a fuel pump recall too as that is a common failure with early model B6's.

DV I'm getting at the same time as the chip. The plugs are goin in this weekend.
The tranny almost feels like it slips alittle between 2800-3200 rpms but is fine after that. Yesterday after driving semi aggressivly in tip mode I cam to a stop and smelled alittle burning smell. Didnt smell like trans fluid, but def like smoke.
I'm going to stop by the local audi dealer & see what they tell me about the history. Its still under factory warranty so I'm hoping the previous owner had all maint done at the dealer,
Oh yeah, oil is getting changed right away too, but thats a no brainer.
