I would look for some of the common issues that they seem to have.

1. Fuel pump whine/vibration when driving (could be fuel filter)
2. Broken dipstick tube
3. Oil leak from lower passenger side oil cooler hose
4. Oil leak from the passenger side valve cover
5. Coolant leak from coolant flange
6. Fuel gauge working properly
7. Water stains in carpet (clogged drains in battery tray)
8. Make sure the oil is clean. The 1.8Ts are prone to sludge if the oil isn't changed properly. My engine was cleaned before I bought it to make sure.
9. Make sure the timing belt/tensioner/water pump replacement was done on time.
10. Check the runout on the turbo vanes (is it loose) and make sure it isn't excessive.

Those are just the on the things I've ran across recently.
